4. Check for Breathing: Look to see if the person’s chest is rising and falling, and listen for signs of breathing.

5. Begin Chest Compressions: If the person is not breathing, start CPR. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person’s chest. Place the other hand on top, lacing your fingers together. Keeping your elbows straight and your shoulders directly above your hands, press down about two inches into the chest at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.

6. Perform Rescue Breaths: If trained to do so, give two rescue breaths after every 30 chest compressions. Tilt the person’s head back slightly, pinch the nose shut, and breathe into the person’s mouth.

Repeat these steps until help arrives or the person starts breathing on their own.

Safe and Effective Practices

Performing CPR safely and effectively requires a good understanding of the technique and practice. Ensure you’re compressing hard and fast in the center of the chest, allowing for full chest recoil after each compression. Do not perform rescue breaths unless you’ve been trained to do so.
